Director and Producer – John V. Soto
John V. Soto is an Australian film director, writer and producer whose work spans horror, science fiction, action and thriller cinema. With a career focused on commercially driven genre films for international audiences, Soto has directed an increasingly ambitious slate of features featuring established Australian and international talent.
Soto made his feature directing debut with the supernatural thriller Crush (2009), starring Chris Egan and Emma Lung, before directing Needle (2011), an internationally released horror film starring Michael Dorman, Travis Fimmel, Jessica Marais, John Jarratt and Jane Badler.
He followed with the crime thriller The Reckoning (2014), starring Jonathan LaPaglia, Viva Bianca, Luke Hemsworth and Hanna Mangan-Lawrence. The film earned Soto the Best Director award at the British Independent Film Festival and was selected to compete for the inaugural CinefestOZ Film Prize.
Soto subsequently moved into science fiction in 2018 with The Gateway (also released internationally as Alpha Gateway), starring Jacqueline McKenzie, Myles Pollard and Hayley McElhinney. The parallel-universe thriller received multiple international festival awards, including Best Feature Film and Best Director at the Austin Revolution Film Festival.
In 2022, Soto directed, co-wrote and produced the action thriller Avarice, starring Gillian Alexy and Luke Ford. The film continued his focus on contained, high-concept genre storytelling designed for the international marketplace.
His latest feature, Dead Howling (2026), sees Soto return to supernatural horror on a larger scale. Starring Joel Jackson, Ryan Kwanten and Temuera Morrison, alongside Téa Heathcote-Marks and Tom Burlinson, the film combines werewolf mythology with the zombie apocalypse genre. Soto co-wrote and directed the film in Western Australia.
Across his career, Soto has developed a distinctive body of independent genre work built around strong concepts, cinematic world-building and internationally recognizable casts. Based in Western Australia, he continues to develop feature projects aimed at both domestic and global audiences.
